Winter Returns

The path is rolling away,

Step by laboring step.

It unfurls down rocks and trees,

Its earthy bareness

stark against the foliage.

Snow laces its way

Down the hill,

Feathery traces amongst

The brown leaves.

Wind snaps and howls,

Dispersing the leaf litter.

It is snarling cold,

As an exposed face freezes

In its bitter embrace.

For a moment there was spring,

Now the snow maiden

Clamps down on the frigidness

With icy arms and frosty hair.
