Prayer For The Dutiful

You lower your head

And say words of pleading,

Your hands folded,

Cupped in prayer.

You sing the songs

You hear the readings

You give your offering

And say God is there.

You give to charity,

You help the poor.

You feed the hungry

Yet there’s something more.

Where is God

In the brutal death of a person of color?

Where is God

In the bruises of the domestically abused?

Where is God

When an unwanted dog or cat is euthanized?

Where is God

When a helpless  baby is born a heroin addict?

Where is God

When a special needs child is not adopted?

Where is God

In the suicide note of a trans teen?

Where is God

In the mind of a vet with PTSD?

The heart is a nautilus;

Many chambers left unfilled.

Pour out, pour out

From your vessel of good will.

Open your eyes and look out

Beyond the faithful community.

There are many begging God

For some sort of life immunity.

Until your heart bursts with love

Then take the tender hands

Of those of who unknowingly

Are part of God’s plans.
